The artist is known for the careful thoughtfulness of his work, and what at first appears to be just a rustic scene with a wide range of characters soon turns out to be something more significant.
About a hundred well-known proverbs are identified in the painting, and Bruegel actually depicted even more, but some are not recognized. Some proverbs are still common today. The artist wanted people to reflect on their actions and analyze their position in life.
