informative
explanation
The work was cut from all four sides. We examined the X-rays and seen that the artist was originally larger and whiter, and the hands had a different position, holding the brush and hammer.
The painting tells us how imperfections can be our talents. The artist suffered from strabismus: in his self-portraits, his eyes look in different directions, which is not the case in the portraits of other people in the master’s brush. This flaw could be one of the explanations of his phenomenal talent.
